Health Benefits of Landscaping

Whether you are getting a workout and planting a tree yourself, or simply reaping the benefits of others hard work, landscaping can be a great path to a healthy lifestyle. Not everyone loves going to the gym, and if you pick up a shovel or a push mower you are able to get a great work out and do something that is calming, creative, and rewarding at the same time. Studies have shown that one hour of gardening can burn anywhere between 400 and 600 calories!

Also, from a training perspective, gardening is a great total body workout that incorporates stretching, weight lifting, and cardiovascular activities all into one! Even if you aren’t gardening for a workout, a property with a great outdoor living area encourages family outdoor activities, which then leads to a more active lifestyle (and more family time!).

Not everyone has the time or energy to garden themselves, but don’t worry, the health benefits are still endless. As mentioned in our post on “Environmental Benefits of Landscaping”, plants filter air pollutants, which provide us with a healthier home when we are indoors and cleaner air when we are out.

Besides clean air and physical activity, who doesn’t want a beautiful view through their kitchen window? Studies have proven that having a soothing environment to view through windows reduces stress and can lower blood pressure. A well designed landscape allows you to connect with nature from your home and is a great way to relax and reduce stress!

Cool post! Thank you for helping me understand the many benefits of landscaping. I like how you said that “Besides clean air and physical activity, who doesn’t want a beautiful view through their kitchen window? Studies have proven that having a soothing environment to view through windows reduces stress and can lower blood pressure.” My grandparents redid their landscape about a year ago and it helps them to stay stress-free and relaxed everyday.

It also creates attractive environment for entertaining and relaxing. Trees, shrubs and other plants that shade the building or the outdoor air conditioning unit can reduce the need to run the air conditioner, while a windbreak of trees eases cold winds in the winter so you don’t need to run the heating system as much.
